Three Main Ideas Under the Prophetic Office
There are three main ideas under the prophetic office. The prophet is a for-teller, a fore-teller, and a forth-teller. A for-teller is involved in speaking for another or speaking in the name of another. In this context, the prophet is the messenger or the interpreter. As a fore-teller, the prophet uses the gift of prophesying the future to tell of future events. Men, like that of Daniel, were viewed to unveil the future. Moreover, the forth-teller is a man who is conscious of the fact that he is being used to deliver a special message. Thus, he would tell forth or he would proclaim this message. He would act as a preacher or a herald of the message, consciously and willingly being used to proclaim the message of God. Jeremiah said, “Then the Lord said unto me, The prophets prophesy lies in my name: I sent them not, neither have I commanded them, neither spake unto them: they prophesy unto you a false vision and divination, and a thing of nought, and the deceit of their heart.”
The wide coverage of responsibility by which a prophetic gift is bestowed means he or she has a significant role in the church. The prophet is described as the servant or the messenger of God. This requires full surrender to God, in such that people will see him as a man of God.
However, how can a prophet serve as God’s servant or messenger if he or she doesn’t provide anyone with service or a message? In the past, messages can be declared to a city. However, these cities have churches by which they were once taught of the precepts of God. The church is essential for a prophet to fulfill his function.
The prophet is also known as a seer. When the prophet receives from God, he is to give the message to others. The Scripture designates the recipient of God’s message as the spokesman. God will reveal Himself to His servants through visions. The contents of ministry are not based upon gifts, neither are they based upon a person’s ability to handle the work, but they are really based upon a person’s character. The church is built upon the foundations of the apostles and prophets where Jesus Christ is the chief cornerstone. The church is built upon men. Apostles and prophets are not doctrines, they’re men; therefore, the character of the man must be right.
