Love your Neighbor

Elizabeth Barrett Browning once asked,”How do I love thee? Let me count the ways”

How do we love? Browning’s poetic masterpiece goes on as to further elaborate on the depth, breadth and height of her feelings for another. Is true love measured? Perhaps so. A lot of people have different views on love. Especially when it is directed towards them. There is something that we can do to know. You can also use this in a classroom setting. Follow these steps:

1. Take a pen and a piece of paper
2. For two minutes, write down every single quality of a friend that you would like to have that you can think of.
3. After two minutes of writing, put your pen down and review what you have written.
4. Ask yourself “Do I have these qualities?”
5. Work on it.

The twist to this activity is that the writers actually get to keep their paper. Everything that they have written there is a quality that they would like their friend to have. In closing you can ask them,”Do you have those qualities?” If you don’t, then you could probably work on it.

What does it mean to love our neighbor? Jesus Christ gave the perfect example for that. He loved us more than He loved himself, but above all, He loved our Father in Heaven, the Almighty One. No one can measure up to His greatness. We can only learn from His life.

By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another John 13:35

To love our neighbor is to be a disciple of Christ. To love each man as we love ourselves. God does not expect perfection. He knows that’s impossible, but He does expect us to try. So keep striving to be better each day. Never give up!
