A Lie is Always Evil
No matter how common a sin might be, it is still a sin. In fact, there are very few people nowadays who strictly adhere by the Lord’s commandments. If everyone based their moral compass on popular belief, true enough, nobody would be worthy of entering into heaven.
Another reason people do not feel remorseful about gossiping is because there is a shift of responsibility from the gossiper to the source of the gossip. People who gossip think that they are merely passing around information, whether this information is true or not. They believe that if the gossip is rooted in a lie, it is not their fault, but the fault of person who originally created the lie.
What people need to realize about gossip is that it is usually a progressive chain of lies. The truth is twisted, intentionally or unintentionally, as it is passed down from one person to the other. Such is the nature of gossip due to the fact that people will always perceive what they hear in their own ways. Therefore, gossip must be stopped altogether simply because it distorts the truth, whether this is conscious or not.
A person who gossips is cultivating the spreading of lies. Therefore, gossip is prohibited by the 9th commandment. If you want to follow God’s law, make a conscious effort to put a stop to gossip.
