Gift of Eternal Life
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. (John 3:16)
The statement, “shall not perish” and “but have everlasting life”, means that while you are already in the death row waiting for your time, God decided to cancel the death penalty and grant you the parole of eternity with Him.
It is good to understand where it all started. From the creation, the original plan was to create man after God’s image. God did not create a temporary being but a human with whom He breathed the breath of life. Man was supposed to walk with God forever. This has been established since the first chapter of this book. But unfortunately man fell into sin and so the plan was messed up. The eternal life that was meant for man was replaced by eternal death. However, God did not allow death to prosper so Jesus was sent to defeat death. And as promised by God, everyone who acknowledges the work of Jesus on the cross and acknowledges his lordship shall be set free from the hold of death and regain the eternal life that was intended for man at first. So there’s reinstatement. Sin brought death but Jesus Christ brought the free gift of eternal life.
