The Benefits of Sacrifice during Lent
You may be familiar with the practice of giving up something for Lent. To some this might seem like an odd thing to do especially when many of the things people choose to give up seem insignificant such as chocolate or cookies. However, Prophet Bernard Jordan wants Christians to understand that Lent is a time of conversion. The first Christians were faced with intense study prior to their baptism which traditionally took place at Easter. The 40 days leading up to Easter became the period in which Christians were faced with the opportunity to be filled with enlightenment and purification. The 40 day period became a symbolic time in which Christians could embrace their beliefs and renew their own commitment to God.
During the 40 days prior to Easter we are given the opportunity to prepare ourselves for the most significant event in Christianity. We are able to look at how we may have moved away from God and become less involved in our faith and beliefs. There are three pillars of Lent that can help bring you closer to God and one of these pillars is fasting. This is the sacrifice associated with the tradition of giving up something you enjoy for Lent. The remaining pillars are prayer and almsgiving (charity).
You can also look at fasting as a way of giving up something small to remember the ultimate sacrifice Jesus made for you. Many would say it seems silly to give up something that seems meaningless yet think of it from this perspective. If you are in the habit of enjoying a chocolate bar or favorite morning latte and each day for 40 days you must remember you have given this item up for Lent you are forcing yourself to stop and think. At this moment when you would normally be reaching for that chocolate or coffee you can stop and think of why you are not having it. This in turn will allow you to reflect on your belief and focus on Jesus and what he did for you. You can then make a conscious effort to honor him by following his word and living as he would that day.
The small sacrifice you make at Lent offers you enlightenment and reminds you it is the time of conversion to find your way back to God.
