Baptism of the Holy Spirit
The crowd asked Peter how they can respond to his sermon. He gave them three ways that they can respond. Three thousand were added that day to the early church and were added to the fellowship of believers. The Baptism of the Holy Spirit is not a prerequisite salvation, as all it takes is a person’s faith in Jesus to receive the free gift of Salvation. However, baptism is a response to God’s grace and it is a commitment to follow Christ by being a part of a fellowship of believers. Baptism makes believers active members of the local fellowship, by which they make up the body of Christ, the Church.
Baptism is symbolic of a new life. Paul pointed out that when anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!” (2 Corinthians 5:17) The Believers can not remain the same and remain a sinner. Instead, there is a need for the old self to die, in order for the new life to begin. Baptism symbolized the death of a life of sin and bondage. There are two types of baptism in the Bible: Water Baptism and the Baptism of the Holy Spirit.
38 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit… 41Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day. Acts 2:38,41
