Forgiveness and Forgiving

How often in our prayers do we ask for God’s forgiveness for our sins? Whether big or small, we are able to do things intentional or not that lead us away from the light.

Things happen and we sometimes lose our temper, have unclean thoughts, lift a hand upon our neighbor, and are tempted to do what isn’t right. Therefore, we have to ask for God’s forgiveness for what we have done. There is more to forgiveness than just asking for it. We must also give forgiveness.

“Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times? Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven.” (Matthew 18: 21-22)  This doesn’t mean that we can only forgive our brothers and sisters 490 times, but it means that we should continue to forgive even if we feel like we have reached our limit of forgiving others.

Forgiveness is not just a gift for the repentant, but also for the forgiver. It takes away a lot of burdens that are caused by keeping inside negative emotions and harboring ill feelings towards those who have wronged us. It is guaranteed that forgiving is a blessing and we must try to be able to feel the result.

Lastly, we must forgive ourselves. God loves you. You are His Child. He knows what we have done and He has already provided the means whereby we don’t have to feel eternal pain through the sacrifice of His Son. Jesus Christ knows our pain and feels our burdens.

When we choose to punish ourselves and not forgive, we are only adding to the burden on Jesus’ back. Forgive yourself and try to be the best version of yourself. God wants you to be happy.
