Have you ever made an excuse for something you did, that you know is not according to the will of God? Have you ever taken something which is not rightfully yours, but defended your actions with faulty logic?

Unfortunately, despite being clearly stated in the Bible on several accounts, there are people who still commit theft. They make excuses for their actions, such as; “I need it more than he does”, “It’s just a little, they won’t even notice”, “They have too much money already anyway”, or even “I’m not the only one doing this”. The more people hide behind their excuses, the greater chances they have of violating God’s commandment again and again.

No matter how desperate a person might be, or how tempting the sin is, the 8th commandment must never be violated. If it is, reparations must be made.

In Exodus 22:7 it is written: “If a man gives to his neighbour money or goods to keep safe, and it is stolen from the man’s house, then, if the thief is found, he shall pay double.”

It is clear that even in the Old Testament, theft was taken very seriously. It was taken so seriously that the only way for one to compensate for their crime is by paying back twice the amount of what was stolen.

That said, if you want to uphold God’s law, never give in to the temptation to rob another off their wealth or possessions. The Bible says in Ephesians 4:28, “Anyone who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing something useful with their own hands, that they may have something to share with those in need.” Such a crime is an abomination in the eyes of the Lord. You must do only what is pleasing to Him.
