“And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.” (1 John 2:2 KJV)

What is the most painful offense that a person has ever done to you? Did you forgive that person already? Did you make that person your friend again? Humans are emotional beings. Humans can get overly sensitive and take offense seriously.

Sometimes the pain goes deeply rooted in one’s soul which makes it so difficult to forgive let alone accept the offender once again. But did you ever consider Jesus? Have you ever contemplated on how he was able to forgive you who sinned against his Father in heaven and rejected him many times before?

When Jesus was questioned by the Pharisees on why he was associating with sinners, he said, “I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners and need to repent.” Jesus was clear from the start that his mission was to save the world from eternal damnation and offer forgiveness to those who will turn to him and accept him as Lord and Savior. The bible said: “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

Jesus came to the world to bring people back to God. His intention was to draw people to repentance and give forgiveness even if no one really deserves it. Jesus, the sinless Son of God, came to the earth and made forgiveness available to the very people who put him to death.

The gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John detailed how Jesus was crucified on the cross. These four faithful disciples of Jesus narrated how Jesus bore the sins of the world and endured the suffering of dying. They all emphasized how Jesus brought salvation and forgiveness to mankind.

But there was one moment that really highlighted the genuineness of the forgiveness of Jesus. It was when Jesus was being mocked by everyone. It was when he was there hanging on the cross, catching his breath, and enduring the unimaginable and unbearable pain. It was when no one believed that he was the Messiah – the only begotten Son of God. It was then when Jesus said to his Father God in heaven, “Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing.” Despite of the unforgivable deeds that the world did to Jesus, he chose to ask God the Father for forgiveness on behalf of everyone.
